She released her first mixtape in March 2016, titled Gangsta Bitch Music, Vol. 1, after releasing her first music video Cheap Ass Weave in December 2015. The second volume of her mixtape was released in January 2017 as she started to gain even more popularity and notoriety before Atlantic Records picked her up in February of that year. In 2017, her breakthrough year, her star went stratospheric: she performed with Lil Kim and Remy Ma, she signed a contract with MAC Cosmetics, and she was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards. Bodak Yellow was released in June, hitting the top spot on the charts for three weeks on September 25th: not only was the song a success, but this success kept growing.

Cardi B, born Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar in the Bronx in 1992, exploded onto the music scene after signing with Atlantic Records in 2017 and releasing the megahit single Bodak Yellow, which hit the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became a sensation all across the world. Throughout her life she has worked as a supermarket cashier and a stripper, and also appeared regularly on the VH1 reality TV show Love & Hip Hop: New York, which gained her a devoted online following thanks to her wit and intelligence.
